Open Access Button Update: February 24

The Open Access Button has been growing the last few weeks and has now mapped over 5,500 paywalls! We’re also nearing 2,000 Twitter followers and 1,000 likes on Facebook. Thank you to all our users and supporters for reporting each paywall that you hit and sharing the Button with your friends and colleagues.

Expanding the Button

Now we’re focusing on a bigger, better Button. The last few weeks have been of planning for Button 2.0, which we plan to release by the end of 2014. We’ve been discussing the needs of users, talking to developers about cool features to add, and determining what we need to do it. Most of all we need your input to find out what you want to see in Button 2.0.

oabsurveyWe want to be community centered and our consultation survey is the first of many opportunities in which the community can input and shape the Button they want to see in the future.

The survey can be taken by any Open Access Button user and will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please feel free to write as much as you would like for the responses. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at openaccessbutton@medsin.org. Deadlines for submissions to the survey is the 3rd March 2014.

In order to expand to Button 2.0, we also need to expand our team. Currently the Button team is composed of 8 student volunteers and we’re recruiting 14 more volunteers to join our hardworking but fun team. The positions are all voluntary, completely online and require a few hours of work per week. We’re growing our communications, funding, and technology teams seeking new consultation and community coordinators. If you’re a student passionate about open access, then you’re who we want! Check out our Get Involved page to view the available opportunities and apply here.

If you’re not a student, but are interested in supporting the Button — stayed tuned, there will be opportunities for you soon!
